Why Jones Translations?

The decision to go for Jones Translations depends upon lots of things. I create things to meet what you need. Translation is sometimes misleading. A text usually needs interpreting. For example, I was asked what 'technisch bestek' is in English. English is context driven and there is the issue. You need to know what context the words have before you suggest something. Bestek could mean different things; it could be the technical specifications, could be a technical plan to do something, it could be the technical scope of something. The context decides the word you choose. There are some things in everyday Dutch which just don’t exist in English. This leads to a discussion with the author to choose the best possible alternative. A good translator, corrector, educator and editor needs information before they can even start. Answers to questions such as: 'Who is the intended target group for your communication?' and 'What would you like the reader to do once they have read your text?'

Again, why Jones Translations?

Your decision to go for Jones translations depends upon several factors. When you need a service it is often less expensive to go directly to the person providing the service. When you buy from a big agency and large company have to pay for their support staff, their overheads. The reason why there are so many self-employed people today is that it cuts out a middleman taking a profit. I am self-employed, I am the complete package. Your satisfaction is my responsibility.

How much does correction cost?
Correction work is calculated per hour. After estimating the time needed for correction, the actual time is given on the bill. The actual time may only be plus or minus 10% of the estimate. You write your text and I correct it. This is the lowest cost option of all my services.

What does education cost?
The cost of a course in business English communication is calculated on the number of hours and the number of participants. The maximum number of participants for any one course is 10.

How much English do I need?

Have you had the feeling that they didn’t really understand what your said in English? Received a look that tells you that they lost the dialogue? I’m often told “Brian, I need more English, I need to know more words.” Most of the time that isn’t true; they need more confidence in what they already have and need to use what they have more effectively. When you have those two things, more English comes automatically and you don’t need me for more English. We look at the English you have and use that as a foundation to get to the English you need.

What’s included in an English course?

I create the course from scratch to meet your needs. This provides a tailor-made course at a tailor-made price. The philosophy behind my training is this; it is not how much English you have, it is what you do with it that counts. This means that the course is directed at getting results when you use your English. You need a solid understanding of the basics. You then have to know how to apply them. The biggest part of the course is the practical application of English communication. That includes; cultural differences, how to prepare and structure your English. How to build and keep a dialogue. Words to avoid in your English. How to avoid questions. The aim is to get you to use effective English. In business English the object is to get the other party to do what you need them to do - first time, every time and without questions. In social English it is how to succeed.

What does editing cost?

The cost of editing is calculated by the hour. The longer it takes to edit a document, the more it costs. The time required depends upon how deep the editing needs to be. I need to see your text before I am able to give you a price.

What does education cost?
Translating a document costs per word from the source document. Some documents are easy to translate and some are more difficult. The easier the document the lower the rate per word. With a more technical or difficult a document the speed of translation is slower and so it costs a bit more.

Who is Jones Translations?
In 1996 I was translating from Dutch to English written text for friends. One person wanted to put the work on a professional level. I registered as self-employed under the company name 'Jones Translations'. The following year I was asked to give extra English communication lessons to the staff at Nijmegen University. Word spread and I won more customers. Some customers asked for their English to be corrected. I completed a course on professional editing at the ITV College of Translators and Interpreters in Utrecht. I used my skills as a tutor with the police in England to expand into giving full lessons in business English communication. These lessons were for my own customers and working for language institutes as a hired-in trainer. My ability to teach is officially recognized and I am listed on the Dutch Central Register of Short-term Occupational Educators (CRKBO). My latest development is giving workshops in plain English. In order to survive in today's economic climate companies need to work in the international business community. The common language is English. Companies need to avoid misunderstanding and mistakes on the international market. This is where I can help.
